Information for Local Authority Energy Managers, Head teachers and Governors

Before any school can become inviolved with a new initiative some considerations will be given to the time and resources required by staff. Many initiatives require the reading of a lengthy Resources back and all too often initiative never really get off the ground. The School Energy Project is different. Instead of another resource pack an Every Education Advisor will come into school and work with the school. The Advisor takes on the meetings with the energy team, the audits with the pupils and planning and carrying out assemblies and awareness campaigns. We will also organise the Community Energy Day and assist with grants and awards. Our specially developed resources compliment current award programmes for Energy and Water saving time on applications forms.

Can any school get involved?

The Atkins School Energy Education Programme is applicable for any school. Being flexible it can cover all the key stages and the range of activities are suitable for all learning types and abilities.

How does a school get involved?

Ideally a Local Authority would fund a group of schools through the programme. (We can offer pilot projects and reduced costs or funding a larger number of schools through the programme will result in significant economies of scale price savings.) For Local Authorities’ the Energy Manager or Schools Carbon Reduction Officer can contact us to provide a quote for undertaking a project within their authority. Individual Schools who would like to fund the programme in their school directly should contact us themselves.

What Information is required to join the programme?

Annual energy data for the school is a great help and can help to measure if a school in savings once they have joined the programme. Mainly we just need enthusiasm and commitment to allocate assembly time, newsletter space and be willing to share success.

How can the children, teachers and parents be involved?

The head teacher need only attend the initial meeting and from then on a member of teaching or support staff and the caretaker can assist with the project. Ideally the pupils to be the main energy team would include a range of ages to ensure continuity in future years.

Local Authority Officers are kept abreast of all work undertaken and are invited to attend and meeting s assemblies or audits etc at any time.

What are the benefits to the Local Authority?

By supporting schools through the programme their energy consumption should be reduced by an average of 15%. This can make a significant contribution to any carbon reduction targets the authority may have set.

You will also benefit from the increased schools registered on environment award programmes and schools will become engaged with energy use.

Your profile as a proactive authority will be enhanced through the publicity work we undertake with the school about the programme.
