Community Energy Days
Towards the end of our time in school we like to share our work and successes with all school stakeholders such and Governors, parents, local residents and other schools in the local partnership cluster. For an afternoon or a whole day the school themes all of its work to energy or environmental issues. The Energy Education Advisor will organise the day and will work with the Local authority and other local organisations to present a cross section of activities. For example pupils may build solar ovens and discuss their applications, Key Stage 1 pupils will build a polar scene for the North and South Pole discussing the animals that live there and how Global Warming is affecting them.
Road Safety or Travel Plan Officers from the Local Authority may talk to pupils about cycling to school, how this saves carbon and how to do this safely.
These days are a great back drop at which to present any awards that the school have been successful in achieving through the programme – such as Sustainable Learning Level 1-3 or Eco-Schools Bronze, Silver or Green Flag. Councillors are invited to present the awards. Delegations of pupils from neighbouring schools are invited to participate and take ideas and suggestions back to their own school. The local press usually attend to capture the moment.
